Former Staff & Interns

Tyler Akin
My name is Tyler Akin. In 2006 I received a Bachelor's Degree in Art History and History with a European concentration and now I am a student at the Widener University School of Law. I am also enrolled in the Delaware School of Real Estate and plan to take the realtors' licensing exam this summer.

International travel is my true passion. I was able to indulge my passions for art and architecture during a trip through Southeast Asia last year, visiting many ancient temple and colonial port sites throughout the region. I have also studied art and architecture in London and archaeology in Athens and Crete. Most of my time is spent reading everything I can about international economics and art markets.

I am excited to work at WTCDE because the organization is a great asset to the local business community and I truly believe in the benefits of trade. I hope to learn more about Delaware industry and the nuts and bolts of international trade. In my spare time I am also a fan of Stanley Kubrick films, the English soccer team Arsenal, and the works of Friedrich Hayek.
Marissa Arvidson
My name is Marissa Arvidson and I am from Parsippany, New Jersey. This coming fall will be my last semester at Lehigh University, where I am a double major in International Relations and Asian Studies. In accordance with my Asian Studies major, I have been studying Mandarin Chinese for the last two years, a study that brought me to China last semester. I spent about four months studying ethnic diversity, minority culture, and Chinese in Yunnan Province, China, a place known for its natural beauty and ethnic minorities. In choosing the program that I did, a program that values experiential learning and field study, my knack for assimilating into a different culture, as well as learning everything I possibly can from a diverse environment, was only exacerbated.

My interest in the international does not stop at Asia, however. I have been lucky enough to travel to other places around the world and global connectivity has become increasingly apparent to me. Globalization is undeniable and evidence of its processes stretch from the rural village to the burgeoning city.

In working with the World Trade Center here in Delaware, I hope to expand my knowledge about globalization, particularly economic globalization. This past year has shown us how connected our economies are, for better or for worse. I hope to leave this experience with an enhanced understanding of international business so as to better equip myself for a life in the international sphere.
Felipe Barbosa
Felipe Barbosa is the Trade Services Assistant for WTC Delaware. Felipe holds an MBA from Goldey-Beacom College with concentration in Financial Management, and a B.S. degree in Accounting from the Universidade Catlica de Pernambuco, Brazil. Felipe is fluent in English and Portuguese.

Ana Maria Benavides

Since I'm really passionate about international business and different cultures from around the world, I decided to take the opportunity to come to the US to upgrade not only my educational background but my personal experience interacting with cultures different from mine.

I'm currently working in my MBA at Goldey Beacom College with a concentration in International Marketing Management. I hope me education gives me the skills to pursue a career opportunity in the international business field. Working as an intern at the WTC Delaware means to me and excellent opportunity to gain meaningful experience and put into used the knowledge I've acquire over the years.
Gavin Bernstein
After graduating from the University of Delaware (Bachelor of Science, Marketing, Management Information Systems, Minor) in June '05, I began working at C.H. Robinson Worldwide, Inc. as a Transportation Sales Representative. As of April 2008 I am doing inside sales and business development for Quest Software, who develop products which help customers get more performance and productivity for their applications, databases and Windows infrastructure. For the past three years I have utilized many of the skills that learned at the World Trade Center Delaware to advance my career.

While interning at the WTC Delaware in 2004, I built relationships with individuals from different cultures, expanded networking opportunities, and opened multiple doors to international business and travel. My fellow interns were truly special, and unlike anyone I have had the opportunity to work with to this day. I met some of the most distinguished businessmen and women in Delaware. The internship inspired a 10 day trip to Israel in 2004, as well as a European vacation set for the fall of 2007.

Since graduating, I have tried to stay as active as possible. Completing the Baltimore half marathon in 2006 has been a highlight, outside of many other personal and professional accomplishments. I am very active in many Southern Baltimore Sports Leagues, competing in football, kickball, and softball. I am, however, still looking to bring home a championship!
Samantha Blinder
My name is Samantha Blinder and I am originally from New York. I currently reside in Newark, where I am an undergraduate student at the University of Delaware. I will be graduating in the spring of 2009 with a B.A. in English with a concentration in Business and Technical Writing and a minor in Spanish. In addition, I will be graduating with a Certificate of Business Essentials.

In my spare time, I enjoy reading, traveling, going to the movies, playing sports (especially soccer), and getting a good workout at the gym. LET'S GO G-MEN!

I am excited and honored to have the opportunity to work at WTC Delaware. I am very much looking forward to learning more about international business and markets, while using and perfecting my skills in editing and publishing. Working here at the WTC Delaware can only help to better prepare me for life outside of college, and give me the experience and confidence to be a success in the working world.

Håkon By
"Can I FedEx drugs to France?"
"Well, we can't give you legal advice, but as a general rule..."

Working at the World Trade Centre Delaware was challenging yet very rewarding; one moment you were answering peculiar questions, the next your are talking to the Egyptian ambassador or researching the viability of exporting used army trucks to Burkina Faso.

As a Norwegian with multiple degrees in Economics and International Trade from Australia, I really enjoyed learning more about the practical, real-world issues in international trade. This experience has proved invaluable in my many adventures since then; I have translated and published books (try 'Memo: the easiest way to improve your memory'), explored the potential impact of the WTO Doha round on grain exports (negligible), and currently work as an international travel consultant in Sydney, Australia.

I travel the world when there is time, ski when there is snow, play touch rugby and start in centre field for the Pacific Coast League champions North Sydney Bears.
Andrew Byrd
My name is Andrew Byrd. I am currently pursuing a dual degree in Spanish Studies and International Relations with a concentration in Latin American Development at the University of Delaware. My date of graduation is Spring 2010.

Although I am a proud Delaware native, I am also very interested in living and working outside the United States. I spent a full year in Leksand, Sweden, as well as a semester in Puebla, Mexico as a study abroad student. In addition, I studied at the American University in Cairo in Cairo, Egypt while working as an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher with forcibly displaced refugees. As a result of my international and educational experience, I am a passionate language learner currently able to speak fluent Spanish, Swedish and English. My current challenge language wise is acquisition of the Arabic language, a goal that I hope to fulfill within the next few of years. In addition, I enjoy playing tennis, snowboarding, reading and planning my next trip abroad.

The opportunity to intern at the World Trade Center Delaware is an invaluable experience. At WTCDE I am not only working with business from around the State of Delaware, but the entire globe. As such, I am confident that this internship will provide me with practical experience, and other useful tools in which to utilize as I move forward in my career as a prosperous member of an internationally based organization.

Emily Halle
Hello- my name is Emily. I'm from Connecticut, and am currently a senior at the University of Delaware studying Economics and Political Science. I plan to attend graduate school and study International Trade and Development next year.

I discovered I had a passion for Economics after a University of Delaware sponsored trip to India over winter break two years ago. My experiences in India helped form my perceptions of developing countries and pointed me toward my career path in development. During my time in India, I was fascinated with the interconnectivity of political science and economics and how the interaction of these two forces had real measured effects on people's everyday lives. I briefly learned about microfinance from Indian professors, and saw first hand the amazing impacts and possibilities it creates for villages, particularly for village women. I returned to Delaware and began taking my first courses in economics the following semester.

I know interning at the World Trade Center Delaware will provide me with practical experiences that I can use as I continue my study of economics. Learning how firms trade with foreign companies and countries will be a necessary skill set that I plan to use in my future career working for a company that focuses on development and international trade. I love to travel, watch movies and spend time with my friends and family.
Desislava Stefanova Ivanova
Zdraveite, this is the Bulgarian hello. My name is Desislava Stefanova Ivanova and yes, I'm from Bulgaria where I actually live at the moment. After years of traveling around in Europe and the States I finally decided to get back because as we say here: "the stone weights on its place".

I graduated my bachelor's degree in psychology in Sofia University in Bulgaria and I went to do my internship in the US. I learned a lot about human resources and management but the greatest experience I got was to live, work and have fun with people from around the world. Isn't that the best about the States?! Isn't this the greatest in life- to be able to try a bit of almost every country in the world? I have to say thank you to everybody that gave me that!

After my program was done I decided to go for my Master's degree in the US. I ended up studding at Goldey Beacom College, Delaware and not so later I met Rebecca and Meg at the World Trade Center with Hakon, Susan and Yamila. We used to go out a lot for beer and dance. Later we got more people and we had the chance to learn so much from each other not only at the office but also at the conferences and luncheons. Great time of my life! I saved most of my friendships I made while at the WTCDE.

Now life is a bit boring because once you leave school and the WTCDE you don't have this foreign influence you are used to so much that makes you feel free and young. Nothing is that exited after such experience. But still, I can say that my dreams came true and now I'm working for a German company as Manager of one of the sky scraper office building they are managing. This year I won a green card for the States that I wanted to have so much for six years, but I think that I don't need it anymore because I choose to stay where I belong, in Bulgaria... at least for now :).

Life is too short and days are not the same if you choose to be like that!
William Jennings
My name is William Jennings, and I am originally from Wilmington, Delaware. I am currently a University of Delaware undergraduate student, and will be graduating in the fall of 2008. I am working towards a degree in Marketing and English with a concentration in Business and Technical Writing. I have also studied graphic design, and art history.

In my spare time I take pleasure in photography, graphic design, drawing and painting, playing lacrosse, traveling, and meeting new people. I love to create with my mind and my hands, and I especially enjoy learning new things. Also, I am consistently attempting to improve myself both physically and mentally, and I always try to do the best I can in every situation.

I am looking forward to working at WTC, and learning new things about international markets and trade. I know that working here will truly help me gain valuable "real world" experience, and benefit my potential for future employment in the marketing industry.
Whitney King
My name is Whitney King and I am from Hockessin, DE. I'm a rising sophomore at Connecticut College with an interest in History and the classics. Travel fascinates me and I look forward to learning about places overseas during my internship at the World Trade Center of Delaware. I hope to be able to study abroad in Italy or Greece during my junior year.

I appreciate the opportunity to work alongside people from various backgrounds but with the same interest in the WTCDE. I hope to become more knowledgeable about the world and the processes that keep our lives moving forward every day.
Joe Kammerer
My name is Joe Kammerer and I am from Severna Park, MD. I am currently a senior at the University of Delaware pursuing both a degree in Marketing, and a degree in English with a concentration in Business and Technical Writing. One of the main reasons I am interested in working at the World Trade Center of Delaware is the opportunity to learn about international business. While I have not yet been able to travel to many places around the world, I have always been interested in foreign cultures and exotic destinations.

The position at WTC of Delaware has presented a great opportunity to gain experience with international businesses. It is my goal to use my current skills in the internship and gain new knowledge of international business and the economy. I hope this internship will prepare me for a career working with multinational businesses, whether it is in the field of marketing or any other position that may pique my interest.
Jamie Lewis
My name is Jamie Lewis. I am from Radnor, PA, though I've lived in so many places over the years I can hardly call that my hometown. In May 2008 I received a joint IMBA and MBA from the University of South Carolina and Wirtschaftsuniversitt Wien with a focus on Marketing. I am eager to get into the workforce and utilize the skills I've acquired.

WTC Delaware should offer me the opportunity to put into practice some of the knowledge I obtained in my graduate studies, especially since half of my studies were conducted overseas and focused heavily on international business and trade. Additionally, I am looking forward to conducting background research and analysis, as doing so has always been a passion of mine. Finally, I am hoping that I will have an opportunity to practice my German at work, or perhaps dust off my somewhat rusty Chinese and utilize a bit of that in the course of the business day.

When I'm not thinking of new ways to motivate and direct consumers into purchasing consumer goods, I can usually be found in the gym, the library, or the movies. I have always been a competitive athlete, and am currently training for strongman and powerlifting competitions in the fall, while maintaining a steady pace of two fiction and one nonfiction books a week - if anyone wants recommendations on something to read or movies to watch, I'd be happy to provide some.
John Loaiza
My name is John Loaiza, and I am a rising senior at Loyola University in Baltimore, MD. I am a business major with a concentration in International Business, as well as a Spanish minor. I am originally from Medellin, Colombia but currently reside in Elkton, MD. I am also a student-athlete at Loyola and will be completing my fourth season with the Men's Soccer program at Loyola.

As I look to finish up my bachelors degree at Loyola and gain some work experience in my field of study, I believe my time as an intern at World Trade Center Delaware will provide me with valuable experience in International commerce as well as provide me with some insight in international trade and affairs. I am eager to work with companies and assist them in expanding their business on an international scale. I believe this will be a great opportunity to work with individuals that share some of the same interests as I do as well as a stepstool in my path into my future in international business.
Maria Loaiza
