ABOUT THE COURSES, WEBINARS, AND LITERATURE

Courses: Courses are typically half or full-day programs offered on an “on-demand” basis, so you access them at your convenience from the comfort of your home or office or on the road. The courses are broken into easily digestible modules with self-assessments at the end of each module. It is not mandatory that you pass these assessments to advance through the course. You may skip around between modules as you see fit.

Once you purchase a course you have access to it for one month, during which time you can go through the modules at your own pace and even review information. Course worksheets are available for downloading and printing.

Webinars: The Webinars are shorter (1-2 hours), more basic training programs than the Courses.

Trade Literature and Books: Offered for your reference.

International Business Courses

Developing Your Export Strategy - $300

This training focuses on developing a strategic and tactical plan for entering new export markets, including selecting the right market for your product or service, determining how best to enter the market (through export brokers, sales reps or distributors, among other possible vehicles), where to make the contacts necessary to get you there successfully, and how to deal with the unique challenges that you will face once you are there. This class explores the practical business side of foreign regulations, language and logistical barriers, and fending off the inevitable invitation to corruption.

Export Documentation, Shipping and Insurance - $175

Experts provide in-depth review and real-world examples on the following topics: introduction to and review of basic export documents, how the documentation process affects payment and customs clearance, Incoterms, export regulations and compliance, classifying your merchandise under the Schedule B, role of a freight forwarder, the importance of cargo insurance, letters of credit, temporary exports, and the Automated Export System. This online course is recommended for personnel who work for companies exporting from the USA, including logistics, sales, legal, financial and management departments.

Foundations of Incoterms 2010 - $175

International Commercial Terms, better known as Incoterms®, are just about the 3 most important letters in any international sales contract. Before you can understand export or import documentation and compliance, you will certainly want to understand the basics of Incoterms®. If your shipment is damaged or lost along the way, how do the parties know where cost, risk, and tasks lie? This course, offered by an expert in Incoterms®, will give you a foundation for knowing the eleven different rules, which differ greatly from domestic shipping terms, such as FOB.
Note: these rules were updated in early 2011, so if you haven’t received a refresher on those changes, now would be a great opportunity.

Trade Finance & Letters of Credit - $300

This course covers how importers and exporters can identify the financial risks and appropriate tools in trade finance. This includes learning about letters of credit, open account, cash in advance, and documentary collection. In addition, U.S. Government and private financing and insurance programs are covered. This course will explain how various financial risks, such as currency and exchange rates, can impact international trade. It will also help you to mitigate these risks effectively. Letters of credit are covered in-depth. This includes everything from a basic introduction to step-by-step instructions to learning how to reduce their costs. A helpful grid that matches compatible sales terms with payment terms is also provided.
Guest presenters include representatives from the U.S. Small Business Administration and Meridian Finance Group (a private credit insurance company).

Beginner’s Guide to Importing and Exporting (FREE)

Want to get involved in international business, but have no idea where to start? This course will introduce you to the world of international business from a beginner’s perspective, highlighting critical resources with each step. In about an hour, you will be provided with a comprehensive package of resources to help you get started exporting or importing.

Product Classification - $35

Correct product classification is essential to the importer and exporter as it dictates what duties, tariffs, and quotas will apply to the transaction. The Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) and Schedule B comprise a hierarchical structure for describing all goods, both of which are standardized around the world at the 6-digit level. However, the United States goes further to specify all goods at the 10-digit level. James Ferry, a US Customs Broker, will walk you through the basic process of classifying your product under these systems and reveal several resources that can help you classify your product with accuracy.

TRADE LITERATURE AND BOOKS

An International Banker’s Insights on Incoterms Rules - $9.99
A former international banker shares 17 real-life situations to illustrate how the choice of the Incoterms Rules affects risk and ability to get paid. How do the buyer and seller agree on where risk of loss passes from seller to buyer? The Incoterms 2010 Rules play a big role in the contract to address the risk. The choice of the correct or incorrect Incoterms Rules can affect the sellers ability to get paid. Incoterms and payment terms have to be compatible. The choice of Incoterms Rules also affects who contracts the freight forwarder and who gets control of certain documents. This is especially important if the payment is dependent on the seller producing certain documents.
